MORROWGATE — At least 62 people were killed yesterday in an attack on the National Fraud Monitoring Office, leaving relatives waiting through the night for news of staff still missing.
The explosion tore through the office during the morning workday. Rescue crews continued searching the damaged building after dark. Police said the death toll could rise and described the attack as an act of terrorism. No arrests had been announced by the time this edition went to press.
The office examines suspected financial fraud and refers cases for investigation. Its staff included investigators, financial analysts and administrative workers. Officials said visitors were also believed to have been inside.
Families were directed to a reception center away from the building. Names of people confirmed safe were read out during the evening, but a complete list of those killed had not been released. Some relatives left with friends; others remained after midnight.
Officials said there had been no warning passed to the office before the attack. Staff had arrived for work as usual. Questions about earlier intelligence were referred to the federal investigation.
Financial markets remained open. A statement issued during the afternoon said trading would continue under normal arrangements.
The names of the victims will be published as their families are notified.
