Letter to May

Read transcription

Ada’s letter to May, 10 June 1926.

Dear May,

They took Arthur from the late shift on Tuesday. I went to the office with his coat and came home with it. They would not tell me where to leave it.

They asked about the collection for the Evans family. They knew the amount. They also knew I had said we should call it a loan so that Mr Evans would take it. I said that to Arthur at the gardens on Sunday while we were waiting beside the giraffe enclosure.

On their paper it was a payment. Arthur's name was there, and names of people who had not been with us. I could not get the man to tell me who had written them down.

Mrs Evans went with me this morning. We took the rent receipt. They kept it and told us to return in the afternoon. By then there was someone else at the desk and he said he knew nothing about it.

Please copy the names from our collection sheet before you send it. Keep the copy. We have begun a list of the offices everybody has tried. Two of the women still do not know where their husbands are.

Ada
