I was looking at the man in front. The thing at the back is much taller than I thought

They were selling tickets while he was still putting it together

Or it was the exhibition figure they told the reporter about

Open the image. The date is above the article, not under the photo

I like that he actually went and asked about the lions

Edwin Voss is right there in the article. Somehow I missed the only actual name while zooming in on the wagon.

The giraffe doesn't need to look very convincing from that distance. Most of it is behind canvas.

anyone got the full version of this picture

This has been sitting in a folder called scans2 since I moved everything off the old computer. The right edge is cut off and I don't have the caption.

Someone appears to be holding a replacement skin or cover. The person by the front leg looks smaller than I first thought, so I can't work out the scale. Is it from a newspaper, or a workshop brochure?

I'm looking for the whole page, not a sharpened version of this crop. Every copy I've found has the same missing corner.

Black-and-white newspaper photograph of workers handling the patterned covering of an articulated giraffe exhibition figure.
The saved crop. The full-page link is in the comments.

Found the page. Davenhall Chronicle, 22 June 1957. The right-hand side is there.

Thank you. That's the one I wanted. I've put the link with the file this time.

Looks like canvas to me. I don't think you're looking at an animal being skinned. The folds are all going in the same direction.

There are at least two printed dots in the man's sleeve. Might be a newspaper picture rather than a glossy photograph. Can you tell whether that dark strip at the bottom is type?

The bottom strip is part of the crop, unfortunately. Zooming just gives larger dots. I found a second copy but it was this file with more contrast.

I think it is bigger than the platform in the background makes it look. The person is standing on something. I keep trying to put the floor in the wrong place.

it was under lost animals in the older edition

Two editions of the same illustrated book. The earlier one has the giraffe in the lost animals. The later one has a photograph and calls it an animal from a collection. Both pages.

If people thought it was gone and then somebody exhibited one, of course the next edition would change

I'm asking why the later text skips the argument about the exhibit

The date on the scan is when the scan was added. The dates on the title pages are the ones that matter here

If Voss was making the one in the circus paper, who decided that counted as finding the species again?

same exhibition. three weeks apart

In June they were putting a new covering on it. In July there is a keeper and instructions not to feed the animal.

22 June / 13 July

Did they have two?

They could have kept a model as well. A photograph from inside the hall would help.

And they could have stood a keeper next to the model. That wouldn't change what it was.

the pattern deserves its own argument

The old pattern argument sent me back to this photograph. Look at the shoulder. They're lifting off an entire section with the spots still on it.

Does anyone have a photograph of this one after it went on display?

rustred
Collapse or expand reply by rustred

Someone had to match the spots across that shoulder. I'd like to see it after they finished.

Save the whole picture, not just that section. The man is standing on a platform.
