Found this in my bookmarks again. Does anyone still have the old photograph where they're working on the giraffe? I used to send that one to people and now I only have a very small copy.

both of the recordings are still there

The two recordings on Expose Giraffes both play. I remembered the Professor video much more clearly than the written introduction, which is probably why I thought I remembered the whole argument.

The Anonymous one is a different sort of message. I keep seeing people put a quote from one above a screenshot of the other. Please use the actual links.

why does the zoo argument end with giraffes?

The Oregon Zoo argument spends most of its space on commercial incentives, conservation language and government support, then ends with “Giraffes.” I do not read that last word as a change of subject. It is asking why the animal is allowed to stay outside the discussion about the institution displaying it.

People argue about whether a zoo is a business or a conservation project as though choosing the correct description would settle everything inside it. I want to know why that choice is enough to stop the animal being questioned.

rustred
Collapse or expand reply by rustred

The last word is doing a lot of work precisely because nobody wants it in the accounts. They will discuss the cost of the giraffe. They will discuss the value of the giraffe. The giraffe itself is the one settled item.

Commercial income and conservation are not necessarily incompatible. You have not established a contradiction just by putting the two descriptions next to each other.

I am not saying any income disproves conservation. I am saying that conservation becomes a reply to questions which were about the income. The reply changes what we are looking at.

And the animal makes that change easy. Asking whether it is helping conservation sounds less hostile than asking what the display is selling.

why is the animal allowed to outlive its explanation?

The Lamarkian Quandary says the theory “relied entirely upon the alleged observations of giraffes”. I think that is why the page keeps coming back to it. The animal is supposed to be evidence for the explanation, then the explanation loses its authority and the animal carries on being evidence.

How much of what people think they have observed is actually the diagram they were taught? I remember a neck reaching for a branch much more clearly than I remember what the surrounding lesson said.

rustred
Collapse or expand reply by rustred

A recognizable shape is not the whole complaint. It is a shape which seems to arrive already demonstrating the lesson. The branch is nearly always where the neck needs it to be.

the climate argument is about what we are asked to accept

People keep answering Climate Change Error as if the claim were that a giraffe changes the weather. The claim is that getting people to accept this much animal living on that little landscape changes what they are prepared to believe about the landscape.

“survive on desert trees” is the bit I keep coming back to. You are shown a huge body and a few branches, then told the combination is ordinary. If the picture works, nobody asks what has to be supplied outside it.

The animal gets all the attention and the trees become background. That is a very effective way of making the background seem sufficient.

Why were the vet and the electrician booked together?

Two notices from Bracken Vale in the same week. The giraffe house closes for the vet, then the power goes off behind it that evening.

I know what everyone will say about maintenance happening in a park. I'm asking why the medical visit and the electrical work were booked for the same day. It's a convenient time to do repairs to something the public is supposed to think is alive.

the height is doing two jobs

Big Brother makes more sense to me than the neck arguments. People get distracted by whether the animal is convenient for drinking. The head gives a view over people who are looking at the body.

Even if you think the rest of the page is wrong, the public is already used to treating that height as something pleasant to stand under. That is an unusually good place to put observation equipment.

Historical Sightings says they have not found a photograph from before the battery. People reply with paintings, which are a different kind of thing.

how is the giraffe supposed to change an election?

I had remembered The Democratic Party as a claim about a party inventing an animal. The actual paragraph has a more specific mechanism: opponents go hunting “instead of voting”. That is a claim about taking voters away, not winning their agreement.

There is a difference between persuading somebody that an animal exists and persuading them that antagonizing the other party is more urgent than the election. Which part are people defending?

why does the same sort of neck get a different explanation?

The physiology paragraph says ostriches “use their neck to hide within the sand”. Put that premise aside for a second and look at the job assigned to each neck. One long neck supposedly gets the animal down into cover. The other is explained as a way of reaching up.

Whenever I ask why a giraffe needs that much neck, I get told that long necks exist in nature. Fine. Why does the comparison stop just before the behavior?

the centre of gravity is the part nobody answers

I have read the gravity section on Expose Giraffes twice and the replies I find keep arguing about whether people have seen one. That is not what the section is asking.

They are saying the animal is built the wrong way for the surface it stands on. A picture of it standing there does not explain how it stays there.

If we were to entertain the potentiality of the modern Flat Earth consensus, the question arises as to whether the center of gravity of a giraffe in nature would warrant a threat to its survival by natural selection through the expected pull off the surface as a result of its collective weight distribution and gravitational drag off of its surface.

The comparison to the unicorn is not saying Scotland has a secret breeding population. It is pointing out that an animal can become an official fact without people asking whether there is an animal behind it.

why are they always in the places that have giraffes?

The habitat section is short, but it is asking the question the longer replies keep avoiding. Hot conditions exist in many places. The sightings stay concentrated in places where there is already an explanation for a giraffe being there.

If temperature is the explanation, why does the explanation need a separate list of permitted places?

Temperature is not the only condition in a habitat. Food, water and other animals matter.

that’s my mum talking. she wasn’t there that day.

The park used a picture of us in its visitor leaflet. I followed the film link beside it and that’s my mum telling me the blue bag is under the pushchair.

I checked my own phone clip from our visit. Same words, same voice. We never sent it to them and nobody asked us. Their film says it’s from the following Friday. We went on Sunday.

I’m not uploading my kid’s voice here. This is the frame from their leaflet and the film link.

A family beside the enclosure, seen from an elevated position inside it.

anyone got the full version of this picture

This has been sitting in a folder called scans2 since I moved everything off the old computer. The right edge is cut off and I don't have the caption.

Someone appears to be holding a replacement skin or cover. The person by the front leg looks smaller than I first thought, so I can't work out the scale. Is it from a newspaper, or a workshop brochure?

I'm looking for the whole page, not a sharpened version of this crop. Every copy I've found has the same missing corner.

i think giraffes actually aren't real.

i have been thinking about this since yesterday and nobody has given me an answer that isn't just a picture of a giraffe.

the head is too far from the rest of it. you can make the legs longer or the neck longer but doing both is excessive. then somebody has added the little knobs. why the knobs. they don't do anything.

every picture that is supposed to prove a giraffe exists was taken by someone who went somewhere specifically to see a giraffe. that is not an independent sample. i have never found one accidentally. horses appear in places. a horse will be standing in a field you weren't expecting. all giraffes have an appointment.

also look at how they drink. that cannot be the approved way to drink. if i sold you something that needed to stand like that to reach water you would send it back.

i'm not saying they're people in suits. i don't think there is enough space. i'm saying we have accepted a drawing of an animal and then built a whole set of places where you are allowed to look at the drawing.

please stop sending me the same video. the video has a fence in it.
